In the news – November 2015

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2015 News: Super Humans recruit magical beings By Tom Austen Ā  A Rotherham-based recruitment consultancy is donating its services free of charge to Grimm & Co, a magical charity opening a workshop in the town centre.Grimm & Co works around the region and aims to unlock imaginations, engage, enthuse and inspire children and young people in the literary arts. It aims to create a fantastical retail destination in Rotherham to inspire children to work without knowing they are working, and increase participation in literacy projects through a creative writing and mentoring centre.Human Recruitment, based in RiDO’s Moorgate Crofts Business Centre, has pledged to support Rotherham charity Grimm and Co, offering their recruitment services free of charge to source a volunteer co-ordinator after the charity benefitted from a boost in funding through the Big Lottery Fund earlier this year. The volunteer co-ordinator role has been developed to give someone the opportunity to become a part of the budding charity, help develop their brand and oversee a range of duties including recruiting new volunteers and sourcing stock, to arranging events and participating in workshop activities. Since 2013, Human Recruitment has supported some of the largest businesses in the region to find the right candidates to join their workforce, as well as supporting local community initiatives and good causes through sponsorship and fundraising. With a sprinkle of fairy dust and a magical potion or two, the quest to find a valiant volunteer co-ordinator has begun. Work is continuing at the former Town Gate pub on Doncaster Gate where volunteers have been on hand to help with renovation work that also includes a beanstalk slide and secret doors. Deborah Bullivant, director at Grimm and Co, said: “Winning the Big Lottery Fund was a great achievement for us. It means we’re able to fund the recruitment of a volunteer co-ordinator and issue specific training for the role. We knew we wanted a respected, trustworthy recruitment agency to help us find the right person, and Human Recruitment fit our brief perfectly. “Opening the new store is a huge job for us this year and it gives comfort knowing Human are supporting us with the recruitment side of the business. We rely on volunteers to help inspire children to create through writing and literacy and the volunteer co-ordinator role is designed to manage our volunteers and the day to day running of the workshop. “Our organisation aims to inspire the young people of Rotherham to participate in literacy activities and finding the right person is essential. Human has a track record of providing a professional and truthful approach to recruitment and we are pleased they are a part of our venture whilst kindly offering their services free of charge.” Amy Stephenson, founder of Human Recruitment, said: “At Human Recruitment, people are at the heart of our business. From day one of launching, supporting the local community and charity initiatives has been at the forefront of our business model. “When we were offered the chance to recruit for Grimm and Co it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass. They are a charity based in the heart of Rotherham hoping to inspire and promote the benefits of literacy to young people. Human is honoured to be supporting this charity during an exciting time in their development.” Grimm & Co is still in need of volunteers as the fit out continues – from prop makers and builders to painters, planners and literacy mentors. Interviewing techniques for employers:

Job interviews can be daunting for both candidates and recruiting managers. When conducting an interview the focus is often naturally placed on the candidate. Experience gained throughout my career in recruitment has taught me that using the wrong questioning techniques or not looking beyond the CV could lead to that perfect future employee slipping through their fingers. For most businesses, recruiting an additional member of staff is an important consideration. Itā€™s one of the most important decisions a business owner or hiring manager has to make. Find the right candidate and your business will flourish, get it wrong and you run the risk of wasting money, time and even alienating existing team members, impacting upon morale. Many businesses often overlook their existing members of staff when it comes to recruitment. Often businesses already have experienced members of staff who perhaps not only understand how the company operates and work well with the existing team, but also may be ready to take the next step in their career. If this isnā€™t practical, then the best place to start would be to give consideration to the different skills you need within the business. What characteristics are you looking for in a new team member? Why does your business need them? The right candidate will be able to get the job done whilst also adding value to the business and their team. The recruitment process can be rewarding, exciting and challenging for both employers and applicants, so, what are the questions you should be asking when conducting an interview? Besides the obvious competency based questions, allowing you to understand their basic skill set, we recommend considering asking the following questions. 1) What is your most significant accomplishment? Give your candidate the opportunity to describe his or her most significant accomplishment within a relevant scenario. Their answers will not only show what they have achieved in previous roles but also their values and what they consider an accomplishment, helping you to understand whether this candidate could accomplish your company objectives alongside the existing team. 2) How would you solve this problem? Asking this question after positioning a scenario gives the applicant chance to show their problem solving skills, creativity and potential. An open question such as ā€œHow would you solve a dispute between staff members?ā€ for example, gives you an indication to how they would tackle any issues within their team. 3) Understand the person behind the CV: Asking questions such as ā€œCan you tell me about yourself?ā€ is great but can leave the floor open for an applicant to continue talking about themselves in a purely professional manner. To understand the person behind the CV you need to dig a little deeper. Richard Bransonā€™s favourite interview question is ā€˜What didn’t you get a chance to include on your CV?ā€™ Asking these kind of questions will uncover more of the applicantsā€™ personality, interests and individuality and will help you to understand the personality behind the professional and how they will fit within your existing team. 4) What question are you hoping we will ask? Ask this at the start of the question section of the interview. The candidate will probably have prepared a solid answer for a certain question they hope you will ask. Asking this question ensures you will be speaking to a relaxed and confident candidate who will give you a better image of how they will fit into your business. 5) What is your passion? This helps you to look past the skills sets of the candidate and focus on what makes them the person they are. Their answer will not only show you how well they will interact with existing staff members, which can improve staff retention, but will also give you an indication into what motivates them. It is important to consider the image of your brand in the employment market, whether an applicant is successful or not. Failing to respond to applicants, arriving late for the interview and not offering feedback at the end can damage your brand and portrays a negative image for future applicants. Remember, the interview process works two ways and whilst in theory you are interviewing them, the applicants is also interviewing you and your business. Winnie Blagden

At Human, we were all saddened to hear of the passing of Sheffield centenarian Winnie Blagden yesterday. Winnie hit the headlines five months ago when a local radio station launched a campaign to help her celebrate her 100th birthday. She had no family and very little contact with the outside world. But all that changed when one of her carers approached Radio Sheffield to see if the 100 year-old could visit, as a special birthday treat. Touched by Winnieā€™s story, the station decided to go one stage further and organised a special surprise party in her honour. The campaign attracted global attention and Winnie received more than 16,000 birthday cards from well-wishers including Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman and Prime Minister David Cameron. The response from many local businesses was equally admirable, with many coming forward pledging gifts ranging from spa days and limousine trips to fish suppers and needless to say, endless bundles of flowers. We were proud to be amongst one of those businesses, but we also recognised that a simple card on a special day wasnā€™t really enough. We wanted to let Winnie know we were all still thinking of her throughout the year. Consequently we, as a team, continued to regularly write to Winnie over the following weeks and months, exchanging stories and small talk, Ā she always looked forward to receiving. Winnie passed away peacefully in her own home yesterday and on behalf of all at Human, weā€™d like to express our sadness of the loss of a remarkable lady, who herself showed the spirit of South Yorkshire but also helped mobilise the local community, showing the character which helps to make Sheffield and South Yorkshire such a truly special part of the world. You can read more about Winnieā€™s story here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-34502658

Chamber Means Business 2015

This time last week we spent the day at Wentworth Woodhouse, the largest privately-owned house in Europe. This year Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber made the wise decision to hold their business to business conference there and the results were fantastic. With the highest attendance of any Chamber Means Business Event and a great mixture of businesses from professional services to public sector representatives and suppliers of all shapes and sizes it was a very successful day. Human exhibited and enjoyed meeting some great people and businesses from across the region. We also used the event as a great excuse to raise some well needed cash for local charity Grimm & CoĀ and Kids in the Middle. Thanks to the team at Taylor Bracewell for lending us their buzz wire game. Throughout the day we not only annoyed our neighbours, and made a few people jump we also managed to raise Ā£80.00 to be split between the two charities. Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival 2015

Last week (June 11th to 13th) saw the 23rd Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival return to Magna and a few of us here at Human were given the chance to head down and see what it was all about. The festival is largest event of its kind taking place anywhere in the North of England and perhaps the best bit is that itā€™s all for a good cause! Since 2011 the festival raised over Ā£150,000 for local charities and attracts thousands of beer lovers each year. Itā€™s not very often that youā€™re asked whether you would like to sponsor a surfing sheep, so when the organisers of the festival approached us with this curious offer, we thought it was a great way of supporting local charities as well as making a few waves of our own! This year, the festival took a trip to the seaside, bringing real ales from the West Country, Kent and the East Yorkshire Coast to Magna. There was plenty of live music on offer too, with both up-and-coming South Yorkshire bands playing alongside some of the best tributes in the business on offer. Each year, the festival relies on the support of local businesses. Itā€™s run completely by volunteers and with the Rotherham Hospice, Bluebell Wood Childrenā€™s Hospice and Weston Park Hospital Cancer charity amongst the beneficiaries we didnā€™t hesitate to do our bit to help out. We had a great time at Baa-Watch and proud to be associated with the event. Weā€™re already looking forward to next yearā€™s event and already have ā€˜The Hoofā€™ proudly displayed in our Rotherham office! Hereā€™s what the organisers said: ā€œIā€™d really like to thank everyone at Human for supporting the festival this year, without the generous support given to the festival by local businesses the eventĀ couldnā€™t take place.ā€Ā    Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā

Caroline Travis, Plate Spinner Extraordinaire: The first 3 months

Week 12 in the Big Brother Houseā€¦ Another first. Look at me writing a Blog! When Amy asked if Iā€™d like to write a blog about my first 12 weeks with the business I was somewhat taken aback as being asked my opinion (good or bad) was something I hadnā€™t encountered in the past and also couldnā€™t believe Iā€™d only been here 12 weeks. I know it sounds like something Miss World would say (one of the many things Miss World and I have in commonā€¦) but time really does fly when youā€™re having fun. I have worked within recruitment for the last 4 years, commuting in and out of Sheffield but my new role here gives me the opportunity of enjoying my role whilst working round the corner and having a better work/life balance (I get a lay in). Having spent the last 3 months working alongside Amy, actually helping to develop the existing administration processes and supporting the business growth, I canā€™t imagine myself doing my job anywhere else. At Human, Amy has this infectious passion for recruitment, trying to help, guide and advise all candidates whilst providing exceptional customer service to both candidates and clients alike. She wants to change the perception of recruiters, what we do and most importantly why we do it. Iā€™m not sure if you guessed by now but I really enjoy working in recruitment and working alongside Amy, as she encourages me to think outside of the box, listens to my sometimes crazy ideas and values my opinion to help continue to build our positive reputation within South Yorkshire. All this and itā€™s on my doorstepā€¦ Result! If you want to hear more about how we do it at Human, feel free to give us a call on 0114 3990085.

Why choose Human – a client guide

Why choose the Human approach? At Human we make a commitment to clients and candidates, we help individuals to stand out in the marketplace. Our aim is to always add value to your business to support growth and longevity. There are four ways we do this: We want to save you money Getting the right match first time will minimise your recruitment costs. Getting the right match first time, means that candidate will stay on and help develop your business meaning you will recruit to replace less, train less new starters, and have people on board who want to help develop the business. This in turn means increased retention of staff, staff who are motivated, engaged and working hard to achieve your organisational goals. We are proud to shout about our 99.9% candidate retention record. Only 1 client has ever had to utilise our rebate structure meaning your investment is not only protected but with Human but is almost guaranteed to add value to your business in the long term. Why do we want to minimise your recruit costs? Sounds like madness, doesnā€™t it? We want you to spend as little as possible on recruitment. This is not to say that we offer a bargain basement fee structure. We do not. What we do offer is a high quality service and a commitment to finding the right person for the right reason. If our candidates add value to your business and support your growth. Through that growth and a strong working partnership, we also grow.   We want to save you time Our transparent process will keep you updated every step of the way. However, once we have a true picture of your organisation and its requirements all you need do is book out some time to interview and the rest can be left to us. How do I know the candidate is suitable without reviewing their CV? At Human we donā€™t work with CVs, we work with people. We donā€™t judge candidate suitability based solely on their CV, in much the same way you wouldnā€™t attract candidates to your business with just a balance sheet. Our clear and thorough process means that through conversations we have, job shadows and a long term partnership we will build a very clear picture of your business goals, culture and values which will enable us not only to find candidates who have the skills you are looking for but also have the vision and values to help your organisation grow. This is not to say we wonā€™t provide you with a CV but we do ask that you donā€™t judge candidates based purely on their CV.   Raise and protect your brand profile in the marketplace   In a period of relatively high unemployment, the marketplace is saturated not necessarily with 1000ā€™s of suitable candidates for your role but certainly 1000ā€™s who will readily apply. If you do not have the time or resources to provide them with a positive recruitment experience, regardless of whether they join the business or not this could have a negative impact on your employer brand in the marketplace. How do we raise and protect your employer brand? Our process is clear and transparent for all concerned, meaning that your brand is protected in the marketplace. Candidates are kept updated and will be given constructive feedback meaning before you even offer them the role they are aligned with your vision and values and have a positive view of your organisation. This facilitates a successful on boarding process and in turn saves you both time and money.   Help your organisation thrive and survive in the marketplace If you have the right people on board, adding value to the business from day one, not only will you save money on replacements but those candidates will be up and running and striving for your organisational goals much quicker than any candidate who joined your business to pay the bills. This is our ultimate goal, for you and for us. Without your success, we canā€™t achieve long term success. If you would like to hear more about how we can help and why we do what we do, please feel free to contact us on 01143 990085 or 01709 717212
